Editorial
Bringing the masses from starvation to full strength
Following the liturgy and spirituality theme of this issue of the Concourse, the editor uses an analogy to throw light on the tensions and disagreements in the area of liturgical culture between the traditionalists and the charismatics.
Articles
The blessings of both sides: a personal testimony
English instructor Sr. Jane Abeln, SMIC, uses her personal story to show how an either/or view of these charismatic and traditional dimensions of our faith would mean a loss of fullness.
Traditional and Charismatic spiritualities: complimentary opponents of modernism
Freshman Michael Houser points out that the real battle in the Church is not between charismatics and traditionalists, but between authentic Catholicism and the spirit of modernism. FUS charismatics and traditionalists alike are opposed to modernism.
Baptism in the Holy Spirit goes beyond the charisms
MA theology student Ralph Sharafinski shows that it is a mistake to reduce the charismatic experience to its manifestations. Its deepest essence is an intimate, interior knowledge of Christ coupled with the power to live according to His law. Therefore it is basic to the Christian life, and not an optional 'spirituality' or cultural expression.
What does 'charismatic' really mean?
Alumnus Adam Tate criticizes Carole Brown's article for being equivocal in its interpretation of the term 'charismatic.' She defines it narrowly to refer to the gifts characteristic of the renewal, and then refers to Church documents urging the faithful to make use of the charisms, as if they proved we ought all to be 'charismatics.' Tate argues that when the Church uses the term, she is using it in a much different sense.
Learning about the Eastern Rites
MA theology student Michael Wrasman urges the FUS community to become more knowledgeable about Eastern Rite Catholicism, which is exceptionally rich in beauty and mysticism, and an essential aspect of Catholic fullness.
Latin, Gregorian Chant, and the Spirit of Vatican II
Former staff member Jeff Ziegler contrasts the widespread misinterpretation or disregard for the teaching of Vatican II regarding the liturgy with the fidelity of FUS. He urges FUS students who will work in parishes in the future to imitate their alma mater in this.
